Fletcher 1920-1929

To ensure sufficient capital to allow the company to develop during the post-war slump, James Fletcher brings in the first shareholders from outside the family.

Fletcher complete many notable buildings: these include elegant branches for The National Bank; prestigious offices for insurance companies, newspaper proprietors and law firms; retail premises; school and university buildings: Chateau Tongariro: Auckland's Civic Theatre: and some of New Zealand's first multi-storey apartment blocks.

The impending New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition draws James back to Dunedin where Fletcher wins the contract for overall construction and the fitout of exhibition halls. The exhibition attracts over 2.5 million visitors in 1926.
